'Don't ask me why/ but time has passed us by' - No more so than on this 18th day of May when we recall like yesterday The Doc conveying in his inimitable style the sentiments expressed throughout that lyric. R.I.P. John. Respect!
I always felt John Doc was the only singer who could do justice to Neil Sedaka songs. He was brilliant and such a nice guy - when I hear many songs I always think I would have loved to have heard the Doc singing that. You were always sure of a great show when he was performing.
Over the years, with my husband being a singer, I heard so many good singers in clubs and pubs all over the area. John Doc was the best. I loved everything he sang. I feel privileged to have some of his music that I can now listen to any time.
I absolutely loved going with my Papa to Memories, taking the gear in and doing the soundchecks. The best one ever was when he'd finished setting up, there was a group of people doing bits and bobs and ma Papa asked me to play the grand piano. My heart stopped. I played Elton John's Song For Guy and I loved every minute of it and having my Papa, the legend John Doc standing there, will stay with me forever. My wee Papa, the best singer I've ever heard.
John made every song his own, not trying to sound like anyone but himself. I miss him big time. Legend. I knew him from the Carousel days, then he worked in Low Waters where my Uncle Willy Aiton compered for him. I could have listened to him all night, loved him singing Going Nowhere. He was a one off and so humble for having such a talent. Missed by all and please keep his memory alive.
My Dad would sing with him in the Cleland club on Sunday night in the lounge when anyone could just get up and sing and the Doc knew every song there was! A Cleland Club Legend.
I loved John Doc and so did my Mum and Dad. They would see him in the Carousel, I'm too young for there but I did love seeing him on Thursday nights in Memories.
John played in Christ The King Chapel Hall. Great nights in there and his sister Phyllis always sat with us whenever she was in.
The Carousel. John Doc and John Healy, you had to be early to get a seat on Sundays. I remember John Healy was going to make a record, but don't know what happened? John Carroll the drummer was my neighbour. My sisters would go and see them play and end up harmonising with them.
Sang with John on many occasions, he was my number one musician! He had the most wonderful voice and was a lovely friend, I was so grateful to have had the privilege of singing with him. God bless you John, may your music live on.
I was at the Benefit Night at the Hibs Club for John Healy with friends and family, many sadly no longer with us. I spoke to John and he said he was determined to sing
Diana, although not in the best of health, he was fabulous. Thank you for the memories.
I remember John when we were teenagers, we went into the Cameronians together to do our National service. Even on duty John would sing if asked, a song he sang well I remember him singing it at Lanark Barracks, there's a book my mother gave me, I read when the long day is through, he brought tears to our eyes. He sang with a big lad Carson from the Daisy Park area. I think John lived in Newarthill. Thank you indeed for the lovely memory from a long time ago.
Loved the Carousel. I played drums for a while with John Doc and Brycie Sloan on Bass. Could write a book about some of the stories behind the scenes.
I grew up listening to John Doc play live. My family owned the Old Mill. John played there many times. I was lucky to see so much live music growing up.
I seen John Doc singing in many places over the years and always enjoyed him. He sang with John Healy many years ago who always sang Diana.
WOW !!! Hasties Farm now that brings back memories. John Doc is a favourite name from the past. Brilliant
Absolutely brilliant, thanks for sharing. I remember John, he was a big name and so popular back in the 60s and 70s! Occasionally my Dad covered for him when he was double booked, unfortunately although a fantastic pianist, my Dad couldn’t sing a note but he was always grateful to be his stand in lol! Great stories and memories.
Ah played wi Doc fae Hasties Farm, Carousel and Faces from the 70s to the 90s off and on. Done dep jobs in Faces for him, he offered me the gig often, but I was with the Altos most of the time!
I remember seeing and hearing Doc for the first time in The Cross Keys in Craigneuk in 1966 and as it turned out, he was a good friend of my brother Peter who was the manager of that pub back then! Doc really was a good singer and piano player back in those good auld days! Nice memories! Cheers Fae New Zealand!
My Mum worked in the Carousel and knew John well, along with others that entertained there, the Nolan sisters, Little and Large. It was the best place for entertainment all those years ago. Thank you for taking me back, he was one of a kind was John Doc.
Thanks for sharing this, just listened to it all. Brought back great memories of nights in Cowie Bowling Club with my Dad Rab Hamill. Cheers.
I remember the Doc when he performed as part of the Doc & Healy Duo and I backed them sometimes at the Cowie Bowling Club and once at Hasties Farm! Great performers and nice guys! Davy
I used to go and watch Doc and Healy at Cowie Bowling Club in the 60's. Good memories.
Queued to see Doc every Sunday morning at the Carousel lounge Motherwell he was great act. RIP
Many a time he backed me singing, as young as 11!! With Anne O'Neill too. Talented guy he was. RIP The Doc.
Good days at the Cowie Bowlers, most of the older ones are gone (oldie here now). I used to drink with Bobby Reynolds, Brian Lafferty, John McCabe etc. Bobby singing Mule Train while banging the metal tray off his head!
Forgot how amazing a singer John Doc was. Really enjoyed this video. Thank you.
I played Bass with John for the best part of ten years at both the Carousel and Hasties when he moved there for a second time after the Carousel closed.
Doc played the Cleland Club for years as did Healy, singing Diana & Delilah.
Doc & Healy the resident entertainment at Hasties Farm. Famously Matt Monro sang there towards the end of his career. It was owned by Bob Brown. The place used to be packed every night, bus loads from everywhere. Sunday night was our night. Happy days.
John Doc and John Healy were the main act at Hasties for many years until John Healy’s death. John Doc then played at the Carfin club for many years until he retired.
I worked in Hasties Farm restaurant for 5-6 years as did my sister Greer and brother Jim and looked upon John Doc as a great friend as well as a very talented pianist/ singer. I last saw him playing a couple of years ago in the Carfin club and he was still amazing. RIP my friend.
He always wore those dark tinted specs. One of many great singers of that era who entertained every week.
John was resident at Cowie Bowling Club for years, what a voice, much loved, a gentleman.
R.I.P Doc memories of a Legend, never ending music, there is a great crowd waiting for you in Heaven.
Top guy. John Doc and wee John Healy from the Crescents!
My Mum and Dad were regulars at Hasties every Saturday and both would sing with the Doc. I made my debut at Hasties at the ripe old age of 13 and John was the pianist. I also remember him playing in The Carousel in Motherwell. Great memories. So sad to hear about his passing.
I remember John Doc so well. I worked in Hasties Farm for quite a few year when I was very young. My Mum Cissie was the manager of Hasties. It was quite an amazing place and there will never be any place like it again.
I sang in Hasties along with John many a time before Sam & Graham when Bob and Cathie Brown were the owners.
A great energy and a man of his time. As a Singer, second to no one. He should have been a superstar. If the World had been just.
Thanks for this lovely reminder of a dear friend and of his marvellous voice. Miss him.
A master of his art. A truly exceptional performer with a voice up there with the very, very best.
I remember my Mum and Dad getting all spruced up on a Saturday night to go and see John Doc at Hasties Farm and many other clubs. His music has played in our house for around 40 years and still Dad is playing it to this day. All our family love the music of John Doc. What a voice and what an entertainer. I remember Dad telling me that John's favourite singer was Frank Sinatra. Maybe both can have a wee duet in Singers Heaven. Condolences to all John's Family and Friends.
